POM Safety Device
The POM, or Peace of Mind, is a personal safety device that connects to your smartphone. If you're ever in a situation that makes you feel unsafe, you can use your POM device to quickly and discreetly connect you to the closest emergency responder.
All Simmons University undergraduate students are eligible to receive the POM and can keep the device after they graduate. The POM is another option to assist students with their personal safety and owning one is completely optional. In order to work, the POM requires a smartphone with cellular service and a Bluetooth connection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the POM?
The POM is a keychain-sized personal safety device that can instantly connect you with friends, family or the nearest emergency responders. It requires a smart phone with cellular service and Bluetooth connection for it to work.
Who is eligible to receive the POM safety device?
All Simmons University undergraduate students.
Can graduate, faculty or employees get a POM?
Not at this time. As the program develops, the option may exist for others to acquire a POM.
Who do I contact for POM support?
Please contact Public Safety at 617-521-1112 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Why are students receiving the POM safety device?
Students are receiving the POM safety device as another option to assist them with their personal safety. However, this is not required and the POM device will only be given to students who want one.
Who is responding if I activate the POM device?
Depending on the location, the POM device will either alert the Simmons Police and Public Safety Department or the user will be connected to the nearest 911 center.
Please note, that the POM device will only work if your smartphone is turned on and is within 100 feet of your device.
Can anyone track my location if I have a POM?
No. Simmons greatly values and respects your privacy and your safety. The POM is not a tracking device. The location tracking functionality is only used to see your location when you activate an emergency alert. Once you are confirmed safe and your personal alert is resolved, your location is no longer tracked.
Is the POM device effectiveness limited to a certain radius?
The POM device is paired to your phone and thus it is subject to your phone's range capability due to signal strength. Please be aware the POM device does not ensure or guarantee assistance in an emergency. If you experience any difficulty reaching the police through your POM device, call 911 directly.
Is the POM Device the way I should contact the Police?
No. The POM device is one way to contact the Police in an emergency. You should still use your cell phone, landline phone, or emergency phones on campus depending on the situation. If for some reason you are in an area with little to no connectivity, or in a "dead" zone with no other option available, you could even activate a red fire box alarm pull station located throughout the city.
Where can I pick up my POM device?
If you missed one of the tabling events, you can pick up your POM at the Public Safety Office on the first floor of the Palace Road Building between 8:30 am-4:30 pm, seven days a week. Bring your student ID with you.
Can I keep the POM after I graduate?
Upon graduation, students will be able to keep their POM device free of charge. Students will have to delete their current accounts and sign back in without the Simmons University affiliation. It can then be used exactly the same, to place a fake phone call or contact the local police. The difference will be the local police will not have the detailed information that you had set up while attending Simmons.
Is the POM waterproof?
NO, but it is water resistant. This means it can withstand some rainfall, humidity, dust and dirt. It's not waterproof and shouldn't be submerged under water.
How long is the charged battery life of the POM?
For iPhones, the battery life is 7-14 days, depending on usage. For Androids, the battery life is 5-10 days, depending on usage. The recommendation is to charge the POM twice a week for 3 hours at a time to ensure strong battery life. You can also check the current battery life in the POM app. When the POM device is plugged in and charging, the device will illuminate Blue. When the POM device is fully charged, the device will illuminate Green.
Should I put the POM on my keychain?
That is one option. You can put the POM anywhere you want. Room, apartment, or car keys are the most common; however, you can also keep the POM attached to a wallet, Simmons ID, purse, clutch, undergarment, shoes, belt, or lanyard.
