Academic Advisors to a caseload of first-year students they assist with the transition to college, selecting classes, staying on track with academics, and exploring/declaring their major
Provides guidance around the PLAN general education curriculum
Available to students via email, Zoom or in person to connect about academic goals, struggles, and successes
PLAN Advisors can be professional advisors or faculty trained to advise first-year students
Assist with sharing important academic deadlines and processes with first-years
Major Mentor
Organize welcome events for first-years declaring their majors
Serve as a resource and second point of contact for all declared first-years; Major Mentors will be listed in Workday as part of a student's “Network” as a Major Mentor
Attend regular check-ins with the Office of Advising regarding their declared first-year
Hold a group advising session for all declared and interested students, in preparation for fall 24 registration
Simmons Academic Mentors (SAMs)
Current Simmons student who assists first-years and transfers with academic acclimation to Simmons University
Provide peer academic support to first-years through the summer leading up to and during their first-year
Facilitate special events, hold weekly drop-in hours, and can meet with students 1-on-1 to provide peer academic support
Assist students with major exploration before declaring a major or minor
Help with course selection and online registration via Workday
Faculty Major Advisor
Faculty Major Advisor will replace a student's PLAN Advisor once they have earned 32 credits
Provides advising support from 32 credits earned until graduation
Faculty in a certain department/unit at Simmons
Assigned as an advisor only to students declared in the same major they teach in
Assist students with doing a deeper dive into their declared major and professional career
Helps students learn about internship opportunities, clinics, practicum placements, etc.
Provides guidance with staying on track with academics and being prepared for graduation
Makes refers to campus support resources when needed
Pre-Professional Advisor
A student who registers with the Pre-Health Program will be assigned a Pre-Professional Advisor that specializes in supporting students interested in preparation for admission to medical, dental, optometry, podiatry, veterinary, and physician assistant programs.
Honors Advisor
Students accepted into the honors program will have an Honors Advisor.
Honors Advisors ensure students understand the benefits of being in the honors program and stay on track with the honors program requirements.
Honors Advisors work with students to ensure that they are able to complete their major(s) and minor(s) while fulfilling Honors requirements.
Success Coach
Supports a caseload of undergraduate students needing additional academic 1-on-1 support with areas such as time management, planning/organizational skills, executive functioning, goal setting, understanding academic policies, getting connected with campus resources, etc.
Facilitates academic success workshops for all undergraduate students
Collaborates with campus partners to ensure students are connected to the appropriate wellness or academic resources
