Meet Your Orientation Captain: Mariana Garcia '20

Mariana Garcia

What's your major?

Social work with a minor in communications.

Where are you from?

Los Angeles, CA.

What made you choose Simmons?

I chose Simmons for a few reasons — the first was because it is one of the few institutions that offers a Bachelor’s in Social Work. The second was to experience living on my own in a completely different city. The third was because of its small campus. It felt welcoming and like a place where I could find a community.

What residence hall did you live in as a first-year?

Simmons Hall.

What's your favorite food at Bartol?

The breakfast. French toast, chocolate chip pancakes, sausage patties, and omelettes.

What made you make the move to become an Orientation Captain?

Having been an incoming student who attended Orientation and then an Orientation Leader (OL), I wanted to see the dynamic of this group change on campus. More specifically, I wanted to be part of a team that fosters a welcoming environment to various leadership styles. I chose to be the Marketing Captain this year because I wanted to test my abilities and the various skills I have acquired from my communications courses here at Simmons.

Last but not least, Orientation is a lot of fun not only for the students but also the OLs and staff members. I get the opportunity to interact with individuals in a new capacity.

What tips do you have for the Class of 2023?

Take a course you are intimidated by but also have an interest in because it might be your true passion.

What was your favorite part of Orientation?

Getting to work with an amazing team and seeing the way new Orientation Leaders interacted within their group. I saw new relationships form not only between the OLs and their students but also within the entire team. I think the willingness to participate each OL brought coming into these two sessions truly changed the way the whole group functioned.
