Exploring Students' Use of Online Group Chats and How Instructors Can Respond
Students' experiences communicating with one another through platforms like WhatsApp impact their learning -- and wellbeing -- both inside and outside the classroom. However, faculty are often unaware of the nature and scope of their students' use of group chats, nor how they might position themselves in relation to these technologies. Informed by a recent qualitative study of the communication patterns, roles, benefits, and risks as students participate in online group chats, this session will provide faculty an opportunity to develop strategies for responding to this ubiquitous but often unnoticed issue that influences teaching and learning.
