Headshot of Sheena Pennie

Dix Scholar, Sheena Pennie '23 tells us what inspired her to return to school for nursing and her advice for other adult learners.

Why did you decide to attend Simmons?

I decided on Simmons because it's a women's undergraduate education and I believe that we as women need to support each other. The Simmons nursing program also works well with my work schedule as well as my daughter's school schedule.

How did you make the decision to come back to school?

I made the decision to come back to school after years of motivation from family and friends. Being a single parent, I want a much better life for myself and my daughter.

Why have you decided to pursue a career as a nurse?

My drive to become a nurse comes from my family. My brother fell ill and was in a coma for some time. While standing at his bedside, I decided to go into nursing. Then two years went by and I had my daughter, and she developed medical conditions. Aside from that, I'm in the medical field for several years as medical biller.

What do you hope to do after graduation?

After graduation I hope to work as a pediatric nurse in a hospital or health center.

Do you have any advice for older students who are considering coming back to school?

My advice for older students who are considering coming back to school is to follow your dreams, stay focused, determined, positive and motivated. It’s for the betterment for you and your family.
