Simmons University presents Addition, Subtraction, Abstraction, featuring new and site specific sculptural work by Annie Meyer, Nygel Jones, Joe LoVasco, and Damion Silver.
Addition, Subtraction, Abstraction brings together four contemporary sculptors working abstractly and inventively with wood. Each artist draws on personal history, experiences, and everyday interactions as inspiration for their complex, abstract artworks.
Annie Meyer creates objects that offer expanded ways of thinking about body, gender, and self. Nygel Jones constructs and paints shaped wooden panels and frames influenced by industrial design and pop art aesthetics. Joe LoVasco's sculptures begin as loose gestures that are continually refined over several iterations. Damion Silver makes soft art for hard times. His vivid and precariously stacked forms incorporate bold colors and a true attention to surface quality.
Annie Meyer is a Boston-based studio woodworker, designer, and craftsperson. Annie holds a BFA in Industrial Design from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and an MFA in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Annie is Director and Faculty for MassArt's Furniture Design Certificate Program, and Lecturer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
Nygel Jones lives and works in Boston and graduated from Montserrat College of Art with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Arts.
