Margaret Curtis

Social Worker for Family Service Society

Margaret Curtis, Class of 1904 (1883–1965), was a social worker and stellar athlete. She was among the first graduates of Simmons’ School of Social Work. After studying at Simmons, Curtis became a social worker and served as a board member of the Family Service Society for 51 years. She joined the Red Cross during World War I, where she was stationed in Paris and headed the Bureau of Refugees.

At a young age, Curtis took up golf and eventually became a member of the Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts (the first association of its kind in the United States). She and her sister Harriot won numerous golf championships in national and international competitions. Curtis was also a championship tennis player. The Curtis Cup, the most prestigious trophy for women amateur golfers, is named after Margaret and Harriot Curtis. In 2010, a special exhibition at the Essex County Club (a golf course in Massachusetts) spotlighted the Curtis sisters’ athletic prowess.
