Julia Barber

Assistant Teaching Professor

Julia Barber is a practicing artist and educator living in Providence, Rhode Island. She earned her PhD from Brown University in 2018, specializing in the history of photography. Her doctoral dissertation, Reframing Art Photography, explored the medium’s transformation from a scientific and evidentiary tool into a celebrated art form. These days, she is especially passionate about translating these heady intellectual questions into practical methods to empower students to navigate our image-saturated world. Barber’s research interests include the intersections of images and power; gender, class, and race in art/art history; visual and pop culture; and visual literacy.
