Aqueela Culbreath-Britt
Associate Professor of Practice and Director of On-ground BSW Practicum Education
Aqueela Culbreath-Britt, L.C.S.W., MFA, is an Associate Professor of Practice and Director of BSW Practicum Education in the Simmons School of Social Work. Culbreath-Britt has extensive experience working with children and families ranging from housing and homeless services, adoption and other areas of child protection through her role as social worker for the Department of Children and Families. In addition to Culbreath-Britt’s work in child protection, Culbreath-Britt has a passion for the needs of LGBTQ youth, particularly LGBTQ youth of color, as well as the experiences of students of color attending primarily white independent schools.
Outside of Simmons, Culbreath-Britt sits on the Board of Trustees at Charles River School in Dover, MA where she Co-Chair’s the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. Culbreath-Britt also serves as a board member for Cambridge Common Writers, an alumni organization for the Lesley University Low-Residency MFA program in Creative Writing. Culbreath-Britt obtained her own MFA in Creative Writing through Lesley University in 2018 with a focus in fiction. Culbreath-Britt’s writing centers on the lives of LGBTQ youth of color where she often merges her experiences as a social worker into her creative process. Culbreath-Britt hopes to further align her passion for social work and her passion for writing more holistically in her role as Associate Professor of Practice.

Community Engagement
Culbreath-Britt works closely with the Charles River School in the areas of Admissions and DEI support. Culbreath-Britt is in search of other meaningful volunteer opportunities regarding LGBTQ youth in the form of mentorship and youth involved in the child protection system.
Research/Special Projects
Aqueela Culbreath-Britt is interested in engaging research on the impact of independent school education on students of color as it pertains to identity and critical race theory. Culbreath-Britt is also interested in engaging research on LGBTQ youth aging out of the child protection system. The specific ideology regarding this concern is still in development. Creatively, Culbreath-Britt is currently penning several works of fiction which are being marketed for publication.
