Simmons Supporting Women in STEM

"At Simmons, we know that science is strongest when it reflects the full richness and diversity of the world it serves,” says Rich Gurney, Interim Dean of the School of Sciences and Health Professions, Simmons University. “Whether through pioneering programs like Dynamic Research Education Academy for Mentoring Students in STEM [DREAM-STEM] and Howard Hughes Medical Institute [HHMI]-supported communities of practice that build psychological safety and belonging, or through dynamic hands-on experiences like our summer research, and dual-degree engineering partnerships, our commitment goes beyond teaching science. We are equipping a new, diverse generation of leaders — data scientists, chemists, engineers, and healthcare professionals — with the agency, confidence, and collaborative spirit needed to shape these fields. Seeing students like Tessa, MJ, and Giselle thrive in high-impact spaces — from NASA laboratories to engineering design teams — proves what is possible when inclusive excellence, mentorship, and a sense of belonging form the core of STEM education."

Inside Simmons’ Data Science and AI Major

Data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are everywhere — what does it mean to major in these areas, as an undergraduate? We spoke with a professor and graduate of Simmons’ Bachelor of Science in Data Science and AI to learn more about what the degree entails, and how it prepares students to enter a rapidly growing field.

3+2 Students Launch from Simmons to Engineering

Simmons University’s 3+2 dual-degree engineering program empowers students to earn two degrees in five years: a Bachelor of Science from Simmons and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from one of our partner institutions. We spoke to three students who have completed their Simmons degree and are looking forward to the second portion of their studies this year.

Shared Discovery and Community Building in STEM

During her time as a Simmons student, Giselle Yang enjoyed serving as a teaching assistant (TA), tutor, and student liaison, and participating in the Break Through the Tech AI program. As a TA and tutor for several classes, she helped other students while also deepening her own understanding of these subjects.
