"Getting Fitted for the Work": Harriet Tubman’s Preparation for a Lifetime of Courageous Action.

Please join us for the 2026 Robert M. Gay Lecture with Tiya Miles as the keynote speaker!

Tiya Miles is the Michael Garvey Professor of History and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. She is a public historian, academic historian, and award-winning creative writer. This talk will reconstruct the early life of abolitionist Harriet Tubman, considering how relationships, religious faith, and environmental knowledge prepared her for a lifetime of bold activism and creative community building.
