While we instructors often work hard to increase student engagement and participation, sometimes we encounter the opposite problem. All instructors have had experiences where one or two students in a class dominate class discussions, take a combative stance, self-disclose inappropriate personal details about their lives, or otherwise are a strong and sometimes disruptive force in the classroom.
Megan McCarty (Psychology) and Sarah Rose Cavanagh (CFE, Psychology) will share some organizing thoughts on how to navigate disruptive students in ways that are both empathetic and respectful of maintaining a classroom climate conducive for learning, and then we'll engage in reflective dialogue and brainstorming together over lunch.
