School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) Professor and Director of Libraries and Librarianship Concentration Daniel Joudrey is the recipient of the 2026 Margaret Mann Citation

This citation, sponsored by OCLC and Core: Leadership, Infrastructure, Futures, recognizes outstanding professional achievements in the area of cataloging and classification. Joudrey has chosen Simmons SLIS as the recipient of the $2,000 scholarship, which is donated in the citation winner’s honor by OCLC, Inc.

In her nomination letter for Joudrey, Professor and Dean Emerita Michèle Cloonan wrote, "It is not just Professor Joudrey’s scholarship that makes him a worthy award recipient, it is his tireless service to the profession and his reach. By my calculation, he has taught some 3,000 LIS students, hundreds of library professionals in workshops, and his textbooks have been used by many thousands more — in North America and abroad."

Joudrey’s most recently published textbook is the 5th edition of The Organization of Information, updated with the assistance of Emily Baldoni (Bloomsbury-Libraries Unlimited, 2025).

Professor Emerita Candy Schwartz also wrote in support of Joudrey’s nomination: “I have known very few faculty members as dedicated to teaching as [Joudrey], and also very few who have influenced so many practitioners. Some teach so that they can have a home for research. For [Joudrey], teaching is the primary endeavour. There are few things more rewarding than seeing cataloging-phobic students have those “ah ha” moments of insight as they start to understand why this course matters. [Joudrey] has given us all the tools to make that happen, and will continue to do so into the future."

Through his teaching, scholarship, and sustained commitment to the profession, [Joudrey] has shaped how generations of librarians understand and practice cataloging,” says SLIS Dean Sanda Erdelez. “This recognition by the American Library Association reflects the lasting influence of his work."

As reported by ALA, Joudrey said, “I am deeply honored to receive the Margaret Mann Citation … My own work has been grounded in the teaching of cataloging and in preparing students to think critically about information organization and its representation. I am grateful to contribute to the ongoing work of this community.”
