Theory, Practice, & Navigating STEM Higher Ed
You are invited to the 12th annual Summer Teaching Institute, hosted by the Center for Faculty Excellence in partnership with Harvard Medical School’s Office of Postdoctoral Fellows. The event takes place in person at Harvard Medical School from August 10th to August 13th, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
This interdisciplinary program brings together Simmons faculty and HMS postdoctoral fellows for a collaborative experience focused on evidence-based, equitable teaching practices, including small and large group discussions, active learning demonstrations, project-based learning, and interactive lectures. Participants will also design and deliver a short lesson and leave with a practical “teaching toolkit.”
Both full-time and part-time Simmons faculty are encouraged to attend at no cost. The Institute is ideal for faculty newer to teaching, but more experienced faculty may also apply to serve as stipended Table Facilitators, leading discussions, demonstrations, and providing feedback. Selected faculty will be notified in the coming weeks.
At this event you will learn more about:
Pedagogical Best Practices
Through readings, discussions, and presentations, develop a thorough grounding in the contemporary literature on effective, equity-minded pedagogy.
Develop a Teaching Network
Over lunches, small-table discussions with peers and a skilled table facilitator, and a culminating group activity, develop relationships with both current peers and others in the Simmons and HMS communities.
Hands-On Practice
Develop teaching skills through teaching demos, activities (learn by doing), and working with a small group to create and deliver your own short lesson.

Interested in being a 2026 Summer Teaching Institute Table Facilitator? Fill out this application.
As the name implies, table facilitators sit at a table of blended Simmons faculty and Harvard Medical School postdocs and help facilitate discussions. They also help out with teaching demonstrations, presentations, and Q&A panels. They receive a $1000 stipend for their time. Please only apply if you can make a commitment to the majority of the four days.
