Sam Hayes studies American government and politics with research interests in national political institutions, election law, political geography, state and local politics, and democratic representation. His forthcoming book, Courtroom Cartography, focuses on the involvement of the federal courts in redistricting and gerrymandering since the 1960s, explaining what happens when the "least dangerous branch" gets involved in the "most political activity." Professor Hayes' scholarship has been published in American Political Science Review, Political Research Quarterly, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, and Electoral Studies.
Prior to joining Simmons, Professor Hayes taught at Trinity College, Colby College, and Wheaton College. He completed his PhD at Boston College in 2022 and was awarded the Edward S. Corwin Best Dissertation in Public Law by the American Political Science Association in 2023. Professor Hayes lives outside of Boston with his wife, Deidre, and their two young daughters. They spend their free time hiking, biking, and enjoying the outdoors.
