Hanukkah is the festival of lights that lasts for eight days. It commemorates the Jewish struggle for religious freedom and the miracle in which a sacred temple flame burned for eight days on only one day's worth of oil.

Hanukkah begins at sundown on the first day and concludes at nightfall on the last day.

Common practices:

  • Each evening, families light a candle on the Menorah recite blessings and sing traditional songs until all eight are lit on the final night.

  • Exchanging gifts for eight days.
