Amber Hampton

Amber filled us in on working in SNHS Admission!

Where are you from? Where did you go to college?

I'm from the West Coast and attended a university where the mascot was made by Walt Disney himself. Try to see if you can guess which one!

What's your favorite thing about Simmons and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SNHS)?

I really like how Simmons is putting an effort into understanding gender identity and developing policies that are more gender inclusive.

SNHS has a great community. We're a close group that supports each other and helps students get the information they need to achieve their goals.

What's your favorite part of your job?

When I get to collaborate with other departments and interact with international students. I understand how stressful and time consuming applying to school can be — so when I'm able to help someone navigate that process it's very gratifying for me.

What should students look for when choosing a college?

They should check what opportunities the institutions have. I always suggest asking these type of questions:

  • Does the school have resources for test preparation if you want to get licensure in a specific field?
  • What are the school’s connections with other organizations?
  • Do you have to find your own preceptors/clinical/internships or does the school assist you?
  • What are the passing rates on special certification/licensing exams?
  • Can you work during the program?

Students should also think about what their learning preference is — do they like a close knit community or larger classrooms? There are pros and cons to both, so thinking about that can help find a setting that works best for them.

If we visited your office, what would we see?

Friendly faces who are ready to answer your questions. If we don’t have the answers we'll find the person or department who can! It’s normal to sometimes feel shy or uncertain when reaching out, but know that we help so many people who are at different stages in their lives.

Please feel at ease knowing we do this type of work because we like to. It’s not just a job, it’s something in our personality that attracted us to this field.

What's your favorite thing to do in Boston?

There is so much to do in Boston — it’s hard to choose just one thing. I really like going to jazz lounges and events with my friends. In the summer, I'm all about rooftops and live music.

What's your favorite book?

I'm always a fan of Jane Austen’s work. As a comic artist and writer in my spare time, I have a deep appreciation for graphic novels and comics as well. I really like the Saga series. Strong women characters, People of Color representation and it highlights issues that are still relevant today.

Who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?

Myself! I've been in films as an extra, that qualifies for something right?

What's your favorite local lunch?

Depends on what I'm craving. If I'm wanting a cool view of the streets in Chinatown while sipping a vegan Thai tea, I go to My Thai.
