Q&A with SLIS Student and Career Fair Coordinator Jill Silverberg

Annual School of Library and Information Science Career Fair

The LIS Career Fair is an industry-specific event exclusively for upcoming and recent graduates of the Simmons LIS program, distinct from the annual Simmons College Spring Career & Internship Fair. The LIS Fair draws hiring employers from the Greater Boston area, New England, and beyond to meet with students and alums.

We chatted with Career Fair Coordinator Jill Silverberg about what goes into developing this important event.

Can you discuss the planning that goes into the Career Fair and determining which organizations will be featured as exhibitors?

I worked closely with representatives from the CEC to compile a list of institutions that have attended past career fairs and frequently appear on Jobline and Career Link. While many of this year's participating organizations have a history of hiring SLIS graduates, I am continuously on the lookout for new libraries, archives, or information science-based institutions to include. We strive to offer a well-rounded roster of exhibitors.

Is the Career Fair serve a networking event, or will attendees have the opportunity to apply for positions at the fair?

Most of this year's attending exhibitors will have internship or hiring opportunities for which students may apply. Others employers participate with broader hopes of building their brand and establishing connections with SLIS and our students. At least one professional association at this year's career fair will be available to assist students with job-hunting and professional development resources.

Who should attend the LIS Career Fair?

I would encourage current students and recent alums to attend the Career Fair, since the bulk of this year's exhibitors will have hiring opportunities available. The event will provide excellent networking potential for SLIS affiliates to meet representatives from various professional organizations, ask questions, and establish professional contacts they can continue to develop for years to come.

What are you most excited about?

As this year's Career Fair Coordinator, I am most looking forward to the actual day itself. After months of planning, Dr. Em Claire Knowles and the CEC Associate Director of Employer Relations, Douglas Eisenhart and I could not be more excited about the upcoming fair, and hope that SLIS students find it an informative and enjoyable experience!
