Simmons Summer Study Abroad Scholarship

Thanks to the generous support of Simmons donors, the Center for Global Education is pleased to announce a fully-funded study abroad scholarship for students participating in SIT Study Abroad programs in Summer 2025.

Eligibility:

  • Applying to a Summer 2025 SIT Study Abroad Program
  • Full-Time On-the-Ground undergraduate student
  • In good academic & disciplinary standing
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5

Scholarship will cover the following expenses:

  • Tuition
  • Room & Board
  • Airfare

Scholarship recipients will be required to do the following upon their return to campus in Fall 2025:

  • Submit a Reflection Essay to the Center for Global Education
  • Submit photos taken during the program to the Center for Global Education
  • Complete a reentry survey
  • Participate in Student Outreach Activities – which may include participation in the Fall Study Abroad Fair, Study Abroad 101 Sessions and Study Abroad Scholarship Info Sessions

Bowker Grant Scholarship Fund
Established in 1999 by a gift from Audrey and Sheldon Katz as individuals and the Sheldon and Audrey Katz Foundation in honor of Eleanor Wade Bowker Hittinger '22 and Edith Bowker Howe '30. This endowed scholarship is to be used to provide scholarships for deserving students who desire summer enrichment.


Internal Scholarships

Applications are available by contacting the Center for Global Education at [email protected]. Applications are due October 15 for spring programs and March 15th for Summer and fall programs.

  • Harriet Elam-Thomas Study Abroad Fund
    Thanks to the generosity of the family and friends of the United States Ambassador to Senegal (Ret.), the Honorable Harriet Elam-Thomas '63, the Harriet Elam-Thomas Study Abroad Fund has been established at Simmons in honor of her lifetime of achievements. The grant is available to undergraduate Simmons students studying abroad who are majoring in political science. It is awarded based primarily on financial need.
  • The Dolores Amidon D'Angelo '69, '72GS Honor Scholars Fund
    Established in 2004 by gifts from Dolores Amidon D'Angelo '69, '72GS. This scholarship is given to provide travel stipends to students enrolled in Simmons University's honors program. Stipends will be awarded to students who apply for study abroad programs (short-term and/or longer-term experiences included) through Simmons' study abroad office.
  • Honors Global Scholarship
    Established in 2011 by gifts from Sharon Keith '71. Provides study abroad scholarships for students enrolled in the Honors Program.

External Scholarships

External scholarships are available for most students looking to study abroad. A selected list of scholarships can be found here. There may be additional scholarship opportunities possible through your study abroad program provider.

  • Fund for Education Abroad
    Fund for Education Abroad's mission is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students with financial need who are underrepresented among the U.S. study-abroad population, including students of color, community college students, and first-generation college students.
  • Boren Scholarships
    The Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad by U.S. undergraduate or graduate students.
  • Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
    The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Recipients receive stipends of up to $2,500 for a semester's study program.
  • Freeman-ASIA
    For U.S. citizens or permanent residents who demonstrate financial need and interest in studying abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
  • Fulbright Commission Summer Institutes to the UK
    The Institutes are three to four week programmes for US undergraduate students, who have no or very little travel experience outside North America. Participants can explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a UK university. Students receive free airfare, free tuition and fees at their host institution, accommodation and some meals.
  • Gilman International Scholarships
    A U.S. Department of State grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, applicants must be US. citizen undergraduate students receiving Federal Pell Grants.
  • Gilman McCain Scholarship
    The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.
  • Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship
    $1,000 scholarship for studying abroad that may be used for tuition, room & board, books, or travel.
