Training Opportunities

The Training Program

A feminist/social justice/anti-oppressive lens is central to our training program. While we welcome a range of theoretical perspectives, we focus on examining the counseling relationship and how the client and counselor's sociocultural contexts, backgrounds, and life experiences shape the process of counseling. The goal of our program is for each trainee to develop their unique clinical voice.

Our training program is open to graduate students in social work, psychology, and counseling. Trainees are expected to spend at least 24 hours/week in the Counseling Center and will provide 10-15 hours of clinical services/week (including assessment, urgent care, and ongoing counseling). Additionally, each week, trainees will have four hours of supervision (one hour individual, one hour small-group, two hours large group); attend a Feminist Theory/Social Justice Seminar; participate in either a BIPOC affinity or white accountability group; and join with other interns in a weekly intern process group. There will be opportunities to facilitate groups and participate in outreach activities on campus.

At least one year of prior supervised training is highly desirable. The training program runs from the last week of August through the middle of May; trainees are expected to be at Simmons during this time regardless of their school's training calendar. Monday and Friday mornings are required training times.

Psychiatry residents may apply to train under the supervision of our psychiatrist; their training requirements will differ from the general training program.

We accept applications starting in December, for the following academic year. Group interviews start in early January and continue until all slots are filled. If you are interested, please send a cover letter, a resume, and three letters of recommendation to [email protected].
