Student Health Insurance Plan

About the Student Health Insurance Plan Requirement

All students taking 9 or more credits are required by Massachusetts State law to enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan or be covered by a health insurance plan with comparable coverage. To ensure compliance with Massachusetts State law, Simmons College students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Insurance Plan, which is unrelated to the mandatory Health Center fee. Students are not allowed to waive coverage with a foreign insurance carrier or the Health Safety Net Plan. Information about Student Health Insurance Plan coverage and benefits is available on the University Health Plans website. PLEASE NOTESimmons College does NOT offer Student Health Insurance to students participating in online programs, students enrolled in less than 9 credits OR the dependent(s) of any Simmons College student.

If you are not eligible for coverage through Simmons College, please visit the Health Connector. The Health Connector can help you compare plans, get information and choose the plan that's right for you. Got to MAhealthconnector.org or call 1-877 MA ENROLL (1-877-623-6765).

MassHealth Premium Assistance (MHPA)

Beginning Fall 2017, MassHealth rolled out a new Premium Assistance Program (MHPA) for students eligible for their College or University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). If you have MassHealth and are in an eligible aid category, you are required to participate in the program. As with any new program, there are important changes to how you access your benefits.

This program is for MassHealth members. MassHealth or Massachusetts Medicaid. It is not plans purchased or subsidized through the Massachusetts Health Connector. If you are not sure what type of insurance you have, ask your parents, guardian or insurance provider. A good way to identify if your plan is a MassHealth product, is to look for the 12-digit MassHealth ID on your insurance card.

Once approved for the MHPA Program, you will receive numerous communications from both MassHealth and BCBS.

For questions about letters from MassHealth, please contact MassHealth Premium Assistance customer service at 855-273-5903.

For questions about letters from BCBS, please contact BCBS member services at 888-753-6615.
