Social Services Advocate

Job Description

The Public Defender Division of the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the Massachusetts public defender agency, is seeking to fill a full time Social Services Advocate position for the Boston District and Superior Court offices.

The Social Services Advocate in these Public Defender Division offices is an integral member of the criminal defense team. Led by the attorney, the defense team provides zealous criminal defense and advocacy services to indigent defendants who are charged with criminal offenses. The Social Services Advocate works with the attorney, investigator and other team members to prepare a clientís case and to obtain the best possible legal outcome for the client. The role includes client bio-psychosocial interviewing and assessment, social history investigation, clinical case management, alternative treatment and sentencing planning, report writing, testifying, and making direct connections between clients and programs. Social services intervention occurs at all stages of the court process, from arraignment through post-conviction.

The Social Services Advocate works under the supervision of the Social Services Advocates Director, with administrative direction provided by the Superior Court office head and District Court director. As part of the defense team, the Social Services Advocate will take direction on a case from the lead attorney and work collaboratively with investigators, secretarial staff, retained experts, law students and other interns. The Social Services Advocate must adhere to the rules of confidentiality under the attorney-client relationship.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, criminal justice, psychology or related field required; Master's degree in social work, psychology or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of social, psychological, economic, legal and medical factors that influence the behavior
  • Skills in client interviewing, assessment, case management and treatment planning
  • Skills in interacting with persons of various social, racial, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Knowledge of public and private social services systems and resources
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and persuasively orally and in writing
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet with clients, bring clients to programs, attend meetings, conduct collateral interviews, and handle emergencies
  • Must have insured, reliable and available transportation, and a valid MA driver's license
  • Must have no criminal convictions
  • Knowledge of defense practice, the criminal justice system, and/or corrections is a plus, but not required
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus

Recovery Team Leader

The Recovery Team Leader is responsible for ensuring the coordination of rehabilitative services for an assigned caseload of CBFS people and integration/coordination of all clinical and rehabilitative services for this caseload. This position provides team leadership, clinical supervision of a team of Recovery Support Specialists, Peer Specialists and Employment/Educational Specialists who provide a varied array of services to persons in the community. The Recovery Team Leader is also responsible for the assignment and deployment of other Recovery Specialists (substance use, health and wellness, etc.) in accordance with each person's Individualized Action Plan. The Recovery Team Leader also works closely with other NSMHA staff, other service providers, guardians, family members, community contacts, and Department of Mental Health staff.

This member of the Recovery Support Team is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the MH Residential departmentís clinical services and the quality of such services, as assigned under the supervision of the CBFS Clinical Manager. This person plays a major role in the ongoing overall training of the MH Residential departmentís direct service and management staff in the development and implementation of rehabilitative techniques and protocols/strategies. Contributes to the leadership of the department in developing and providing quality services based on a rehabilitation model of services. Responsible for guiding the use of best practice strategies such as motivational interviewing and ensuring a focus on person centered treatment.

Schedule: Mon-Fri 9a-5p (40 hrs)

Requirements/Qualifications

LICSW/LMHC required. Knowledge of DMH regulations, psychiatric rehabilitation philosophy and techniques required. A valid driverís license and vehicle needed. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of all client information.

Faculty Position

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Applicants will be expected to provide administrative direction to the Department, teach courses in the Department of Social Work, participate in research and scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students, engage in service to the university and community, and participate in department, college, and university committee work.

DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Social Work is a dynamic and vibrant learning community, accredited by CSWE to offer the baccalaureate social work degree.
