Gender & Development

Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID)
AWID is an international membership organization committed to gender equality and a just and sustainable development process. AWID facilitates a three-way exchange or "trialogue" among scholars, practitioners and policymakers in order to develop effective and transformative approaches for improving the lives of women and girls worldwide.

The Global Fund for Women
The Global Fund for Women provides flexible, timely grants to women's groups around the world striving to improve women's human rights. The challenges that women face vary widely across communities, cultures, religious traditions, and countries. We believe that women themselves know best how to determine their needs and propose solutions for lasting change. The Global Fund for Women listens to women's groups, and supports their efforts to improve the situation of women, even when the issues they address are difficult or controversial.

Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO)
WEDO is a global organization working to increase women's visibility, roles and leadership in public policy-making through peace, gender, human rights, environmental and economic justice campaigns; through advocacy nationally, regionally, at the United Nations and in international financial institutions; and through local actions.


Gender Equity

International Labour Organization's Gender Equality Tool Website
On March 8 2002, in celebration of International Women's Day, the ILO launched a website on gender equality. The Gender Equality Tool, a participatory website managed by the ILO Bureau for Gender Equality, is designed to promote information exchange and enhance knowledge on gender-related issues. The website is accessible in English, French, and Spanish.

Ms. Foundation for Women: The National Women's Fund
The Ms. Foundation for Women, a national, multi-issue, public women's fund, supports the efforts of women and girls to govern their own lives and influence the world around them. They fund and assist women's self-help organizing efforts, and pursue changes in public consciousness, law, philanthropy, and social policy. The Foundation directs resources to break down barriers based on race, class, age, disability, sexual orientation and culture.

South Africa Commission on Gender Equality (CGE)
The Commission on Gender Equality is one of the six State Institutions Supporting Constitutional Democracy called for in the 1996 South African Constitution. This international organization is committed to creating a society free from gender discrimination and all other forms of oppression. They strive for the transformation of society through exposing gender discrimination in laws, policies and practices; advocating changes in sexist attitudes and gender stereotypes; and instilling respect for women's rights as human rights.


Gender Research

The Boston Consortium for Gender, Security and Human Rights
The Boston Consortium for Gender, Security and Human Rights is a group of six leading academic centers and programs in Boston dedicated to research and study on issues regarding gender and security, human rights, conflict resolution and prevention. The Boston Consortium will serve as a means of mutual consultation, intellectual invention, and program development on the general subject of gender in international security.

International Center for Research on Women (ICRW)
ICRW is dedicated to promoting social and economic development with women's full participation. They generate quality, empirical information and technical assistance on women's productive and reproductive roles, their status in the family, their leadership in society, and their management of environmental resources. ICRW advocates with governments and multilateral agencies, convenes experts in formal and informal forums, and engages in an active publications and information program to advance women's rights and opportunities. ICRW was founded in 1976 and focuses principally on women in developing and transition countries.

National Council for Research on Women (NCRW)
The mission of NCRW is to generate and facilitate collaborative research, communication, and cooperative exchange among member centers and affiliates. It works to expand national and international networks of organizations and individuals and disseminate current information on research, policy and action initiatives, funding opportunities, and other resources. Another core component of NCRW's mission is to promote visibility for feminist research and analysis and build stronger links between research, policy, action, and the media.

Gender Inn
Gender Inn is a searchable, international database providing access to over 6,000 records pertaining to feminist theory, feminist literary criticism, and gender studies focusing on English and American literature.

Jean Baker Miller Training Institute (JBMTI)
Part of the Wellesley Centers for Women, which includes the Stone Center and the Center for Research on Women, JBMTI is based on the Relational/Cultural Model developed at the Stone Center, which suggests that growth-fostering relationships are a central human necessity and disconnections are the source of psychological problems. The workshops, courses, professional trainings, publications, and ongoing projects at the Institute explore applications of the relational approach and integrate research, psychological theory, and social action. CGO Faculty Affiliate Joyce Fletcher is a Senior Research Scholar at JBMTI.

Stanford University Clayman Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG)
IRWG is nationally and internationally known for its work. The Institute supports research on women's changing economic and social roles and organizes educational programs that make such work accessible to the public. These programs have contributed to policy making and leadership on issues with enormous impact on women and their families.

University of Michigan's Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG)
This institute's activities link research in Women's Studies, disciplinary departments, interdisciplinary programs and the professional schools at the University of Michigan. This research explores differences and commonalities among and between women and men in the multicultural United States and internationally. The site provides research information, a calendar of events, newsletter, and web links.

Wellesley Centers for Women
For more than a quarter century, the Wellesley Centers for Women has been a driving force, both behind the scenes and in the spotlight, promoting positive change for women and girls. The nation's largest women's research center, WCW is the powerful alliance of the Stone Center and the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College.

Women's Studies Database at the University of Maryland
A large and comprehensive database on the general topic of women's studies. Includes conferences, bibliographies, calls for papers, job listings, historical documents, film reviews, and more.

Women's Studies Librarian's Office of the University of Wisconsin System
This international site provides a large selection of bibliographies of and links to print and online resources pertaining to women and to gender studies.


Leadership

American Association of University Women (AAUW)
AAUW is a national organization that promotes education and equity for all women and girls. It is composed of three corporations: The Association, which lobbies and advocates for education and equity; The AAUW Educational Foundation, which funds pioneering research on girls and education, community action projects, and fellowships and grants for outstanding women around the globe; and The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, which provides funds and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education.

Columbia Consultancy
The Columbia Consultancy provides women with career and executive coaching in order to help them leverage their leadership, enhance their performance, balance their lives, and find success on their own terms. They also offer a variety of career and leadership development workshops.

Aspen Insititute Business and Society Program
The Business and Society Program is an international, non-profit division of The Aspen Institute. Their mission is to bring together innovative thinkers and leaders from business, academia, and the social sector to develop new and better ways to address complex social issues. They create a dialogue that changes attitudes, elevates understanding, and builds the collective will for business involvement in meaningfully addressing problems that undermine the social and business environment. Maureen Scully, CGO Faculty Affiliate, is also a Research Associate at the Business and Society Program, where she is creating a clearinghouse of cases on the synergies between addressing social issues and running effective businesses.

The Enlightened Power Project
Enlightened Power is an evolved and effective practice of leadership that moves beyond hierarchical, dictatorial and empirical management styles encouraging cooperative, collaborative, and more focused methods of producing results. This site is a valuable resource for today's leaders. CGO Faculty Affiliate Stacy Blake-Beard contributed a chapter to the companion book, Enlightened Power: How Women are Transforming the Practice of Leadership.

Institute for Women's Leadership, Rutgers University
The Institute for Women's Leadership is a consortium of six women's programs at Rutgers University that has been created to study how and why women lead, and to develop and promote programs that prepare women of all ages to lead effectively. The Institute includes the Center for Women's Global Leadership which develops and facilitates women's leadership for women's human rights and social justice worldwide. The Center's programs promote the leadership of women and advance feminist perspectives in policy-making in local, national and international arenas. Faculty from the Institute recently published a book entitled "Talking Leadership: Conversations with Women in Power" (Rutgers University Press, 1999) which includes interviews with a diverse and fascinating group of women leaders.


Organizational Change

Chaos Management Ltd
Chaos Management helps groups and organizations achieve greater balance between structure and creativity in order to work more optimally. Through international consultation and educational programs, they help groups to develop three areas of competence that facilitate balance: the development of participation, collaboration, and leadership; the strategic management of differences in the global context; and the organization of learning and change efforts. Evangelina Holvino, a CGO Affiliate, is the President of Chaos Management. The web site also offers a very useful reading list on class and gender relations compiled by Evangelina Holvino and Maureen Scully.

The Society for Organizational Learning (SoL)
SoL is a global learning community dedicated to building and applying knowledge about fundamental institutional change. Their vision is to help make the world a better place to live in by building organizations worthy of people's fullest commitment. The purpose of SoL is to discover, integrate and implement theories and practices for the independent development of people and their institutions.

The Diversity Factor
A quarterly journal founded in 1992, The Diversity Factor's approach is not for the faint-hearted, or for organizations that think "managing diversity" is a clever way to avoid dealing with discrimination in the workplace.

Diversity Journal
A journal aimed at corporate management and diversity practitioners.

Gender in Management Review
This journal, published in the United Kingdom, publishes articles on leading edge research findings, theories and emerging trends relating to women in leadership and management. It is available in printed and online formats.

Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law
This national journal publishes papers addressing social and political equality under the law. Gender plays a unique role in the formation of social policy, as well as the administration and development of the law. Excerpts from current and archived issues are available on-line, as well as subscription, article submittal, and resources information.

Meridians
Meridians is a new, peer-reviewed, feminist, interdisciplinary journal whose goal is to provide a forum for the finest scholarship and creative work by and about women of color in U.S. and international contexts.

Working Mother
This on-line version of the magazine features articles, a resource center, information on conference, discussion boards, awards nominations, related links, and subscription information.


Women & Business

Advancing Women
Advancing Women provides an International Business and Career Community: news, networking & strategy for women. The site features Advancing Women in Leadership, an online professional journal for women in leadership, providing manuscripts that report, synthesize, review, or analyze scholarly inquiry focusing on women's issues. Chat rooms and message boards are also available.

Catalyst
Catalyst works with business to advance women. This leading non-profit, national organization offers advisory services, a speakers bureau, a corporate board placement service, an information center, and conducts groundbreaking research.

Forté Foundation
Forté Foundation is a consortium of major corporations and top business schools that has become a powerful change agent in educating and directing talented women toward leadership roles in business.

National Association for Female Executives
The Association has 200 networks in cities across the country, a magazine, Executive Female, and a website, Women@Work. Their goal is to provide resources and services that will help women achieve career success and financial security. Online networking, feature articles.

National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO)
National Association of Women Business Owners propels women entrepreneurs into economic, social, and political spheres of power worldwide. NAWBO is an organization which works to:

U.S. Small Business Administration: Office of Women's Business Ownership (OWBO)
The Office of Women's Business Ownership (OWBO) assists women achieve their dreams and improve their communities by helping them start and run successful businesses, regardless of social or financial disadvantage, race, ethnicity or business background. OWBO and the Women's Business Center Program are integral components of Entrepreneurial Development's network of training and counseling services.


Women, Science, & Technology

AWIS: Association of Women in Science
AWIS is dedicated to achieving equality and full participation for women in science, technology, engineering, and math. The publish a practical and informative magazine, Women in Science, carry our advocacy work and legislative lobbying in the United States, provide internships, scholarships, and mentoring programs, and post job listings on their web site and in their bi-monthly magazine.

The Center for Women and Information Technology
The Center for Women and Information Technology established at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County seeks to address and rectify women's underrepresentation in IT and to enhance understanding of the relationship between gender and IT. This site offers a collection of news articles about women and IT, curricular resources (web-based syllabi, web projects, and other online materials), and links to gender-related sites and sites focusing on women or girls and IT.

Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (CWSEM)
CWSEM of the National Research Council serves as a national focus to advocate action for increasing the participation of women in the science and engineering workforce. CWSEM also acts as an informational resource to improve understanding of the issues that affect the number of women who pursue careers in science and engineering. The site provides information on their current projects, publications, symposia on careers of women in science, and related web links.

Gender, Science and Technology Gateway
This Gender, Science and Technology Gateway is presented by the Gender Advisory Board of the UN Commission on S&T for Development (UNCSTD) to help policy makers implement the Gender Working Group recommendations. The recommendations are meant to address some of the gendered inequalities of science and technology for development as it has been practiced to date. The site is organized according to region and according to the 7 critical areas for transformative action. It is aimed at policy makers at all levels: Education, Careers, Needs of Society, S&T Decision-Making, Local Knowledge Systems, Ethical Issues, and Collecting Gender Disaggregated Data.

WITI: International Network of Women in Technology
WITI offers international information and networking opportunities. The focus is on issues faced by women in technology. Their site features news, articles, career information, information on conferences, regional chapters, and a WITI event calendar.


Work-Family

Center for Work and Family (CWF)
The Center for Work and Family, located within the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College, is a national research organization dedicated to increasing the quality of life of working families by promoting the responsiveness of workplaces and communities to their needs. The Center uses three core strategies to pursue its mission: research, workplace partnerships, and communication & information services.

Corporate Voices for Working Families
Corporate Voices for Working Families is the leading national business membership organization representing the private sector voice in the dialogue on public policy issues involving working families. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, Corporate Voices for Working Families aims to improve the lives of all working families by developing and advancing innovative and sustainable policies that have bipartisan support built through collaboration among the private sector, government and other stakeholders.

Families and Work Institute (FWI)
FWI is a national institute aiming to identify and address the issues of creating stronger families, more supportive communities, and more effective workplaces. Their site features press releases, interactive forms, and information about the Institute's research projects and publications.

Sloan Work and Family Research Network
This national site, which is geared toward work-family researchers and sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, provides access to information and literature on work-family issues. Also offered are a literature database, discussion groups and a newsletter.

Work & Family Connection
Work & Family Connection is a clearinghouse of news and information about work-life issues and practices. The web site serves as a searchable forum to exchange information. It offers a list of important upcoming national conferences, some landmark work-life studies, a report on model companies and links to other valuable work-life resources.
