Prepare for Lifelong Career Success
Simmons provides an environment that empowers young women to be leaders in their professions — and have meaningful lives. The Career Education Center (CEC) helps you discover who you are and how to find the careers that are right for you. Located in one of the world's great career capitals, Simmons provides a multitude of inroads to the city's health care, business and finance, education, technology, social work, communications, and research professions. No matter what your career focus is, the CEC can help you pursue it. And our services are available to you throughout your life.
The Career Education Center uses a comprehensive five-step career development model called the STEPS Career Development Plan. It provides a career curriculum and action steps to help students acquire knowledge of self, career paths, and academic and career opportunities.
- First Year: Assessment: Explore and assess skills and interests.
- Sophomore Year: Exploration: Select major(s)/minor(s) and gain experience through internships, service learning, research projects, and study abroad program.
- Junior Year: Preparation: Refine focus and explore career options, including the job market or graduate school.
- Senior Year: Implementation/Decision-Making: Determine best options and create a strategic plan to achieve career goals.
The CEC's team of career development professionals has expertise in providing personalized career coaching. One-to-one meetings provide you with personal advice to help address your career concerns, from discovering your strengths and interests to exploring career options, determining your major, developing your résumé, preparing to interview or negotiate, and much more. In addition, the CEC works closely with the academic deans and program directors to provide strategic, integrated career development workshops that begin in the first year at Simmons.
Experiential Learning: Simmons's emphasis on a liberal arts education, coupled with real-world experience, gets you the exposure and practice you need to be successful. Internships, research projects, and study abroad programs are integral components of a Simmons education.
Recent student internship sites include Reebock, Arnold Worldwide, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Meryl Lynch, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and the Museum of Science, among others.
Employer Recruiting and Career Fairs: Throughout the year a variety of employers are invited to recruit Simmons students for volunteer, internship and full-time positions. We sponsor a number of career fairs throughout the academic year such as our annual Spring Career and Internship Fair.
Job Boards and Student Employment: The CEC has two online job boards with listings specifically for Simmons students. CareerLink lists internships and full-time jobs, and a new Peer Internship Network. CA$H is a separate listing of on-campus and off-campus work-study and other opportunities.
CEC Website: The CEC launched a brand new, comprehensive website in 2012 with rich content and easy access, your "Career Preparation Destination."
Career Resources at Beatley Library: The library has rich career resources and topics. There is a dedicated space for career resources available in print and a rich array of online resources including over 60 career guides that are accessible on the Beatley Library website.
CEC Social Media: The CEC has our own Facebook page, so watch for regular updates throughout the year. We are also active participants in the Simmons Alumnae/i LinkedIn group, which any member of the Simmons community can join.
Success Connection Leadership Program: This highly competitive program for undergraduates is a unique mentoring opportunity that allows exceptional Simmons seniors to visit some of the most dynamic work environments in the country. Simmons alumnae in a wide variety of professions host qualified seniors for an up-close perspective on the challenges and rewards experienced by executive women in prestigious organizations.
Attending college should be an adventure of self-discovery. At Simmons, we want your investment to yield a lifelong return. The CEC takes our commitment to students seriously, honoring the Simmons promise to put you first.
