Nutrition Programs at Simmons University
Our programs are designed to extend beyond acute care issues to promote community health and the practical aspects of working in the field of nutritional wellness.
Graduate Program VideosSimmons University’s Master of Science in Nutrition degree program helps students develop an advanced understanding of nutrition, fitness, and wellness. Graduates of the program evaluate health behaviors on a global level and seek to improve the health of our communities through research and education. They learn how to bring innovative ideas and entrepreneurial endeavors to fruition.
Whether you decide to study online through our new distance learning program or attend classes on campus—surrounded by the world-renowned teaching hospitals and research facilities along Longwood Avenue in Boston—our program is designed to extend beyond acute care issues to promote community health. Students learn the practical aspects of working in the field of nutritional wellness.
Our students come from backgrounds in nutrition, biology, health sciences, health education, athletic training, exercise physiology, and physical education. Upon graduation, they are prepared for a wide range of careers in areas such as research, community nutrition, and private practice.
According to the World Health Organization, health promotion enables people to increase control over their own health. It covers a wide range of social and environmental interventions that are designed to benefit and promote wellness by addressing and preventing the root causes of poor health, rather than focusing on treatment and cure alone. Armed with a Master's degree, graduates of Simmons' Master's in Nutrition program provide services to facilitate and maintain the health of individuals and communities.
Students in the Master's in Nutrition program learn the fundamentals of wellness and health promotion, including how to critically review scientific evidence. Students customize their plan of study by choosing one of two tracks or concentrations: the Research track or the Entrepreneurship track.
The Research track is designed for students interested in research and nutrition epidemiology. The curriculum culminates with the completion of a thesis research project.
The Entrepreneurship track is for students interested in starting their own business in the food and nutrition field. The curriculum includes courses from the Simmons School of Business and culminates with the completion of a business plan.
Our Nutrition master's program can be completed in one academic year including one summer session, or in two to four years of part-time study (for U.S. students only). On-campus classes are offered in the evening with some individual courses offered online, and our new online program offers fully online courses. Students pursuing the online degree have the same opportunities to customize their program as students in the on-campus program by selecting from either the Research or Entrepreneurship tracks.
Graduates of Simmons’ Nutrition master's program go on to pursue rewarding careers in public health and nutrition, in fields such as:
