It’s tempting to take our foot off the gas once an election cycle ends. Yet, those who want to restrict voter access are not taking breaks between election cycles. After the 2020 election we have seen record numbers of legislative restrictions around voting at the state level. With increasing political violence and polarization, the months until the 2024 election may be some of the most critical in our history. Increasing voter registration and engagement, especially among younger voters, is work for the off season to meaningfully increase access to the ballot box and to allow time for legal challenges to anti-democratic laws that suppress the vote. Our work as public health professionals, whether in direct care/service or policy construction, relies on a bedrock of functional democracy to ensure equitable solutions to structural injustices. Please join HERE4Justice as we reflect on the midterm elections and our path forward to 2024.
