The nation's first institute of higher learning to offer training for clinical social workers

In 1904, Simmons was the nation's first institute of higher learning to offer training for clinical social workers, at the forefront of educating students for medical social work and managed care practice.

Today, the School of Social Work continues to provide a rigorous clinical social work education for men and women, including a nationally accredited Master of Social Work (MSW) Program and PhD in Social Work designed for advanced clinical scholars. The innovative Behavior Analysis and Education programs provide students with hands-on experience that integrates education and practice with social justice values, multicultural perspectives, and a strong emphasis on field education.

More About SSW

In addition, the School of Social Work houses the Department of Behavioral Analysis and the Department of Education. Behavior Analysis is a nationally-recognized program where students may earn an MS, EdS or PhD in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. In addition, the Simmons College course sequence is approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and meets the coursework requirements for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst examination.

The Department of Education offers master's degree programs that lead to initial licensure in Massachusetts for Elementary Education, Moderate Disabilities, and Severe Disabilities. Additionally, we offer a Dual General and Special Education master's degree program, which leads to licensure for both Elementary Education and Moderate Disabilities, and provides exceptional preparation for inclusive classroom teaching. For initially licensed teachers, we offer Professional Licensure programs and a Moderate Disabilities Add-On Licensure track. All programs are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and emphasize engagement with and service to learners of all backgrounds and abilities.

The School of Social Work has many exciting initiatives, including our Urban Leadership Program, Spanish language courses for social workers, international study, and schedules that accommodate working professionals. We are proud to announce that the School of Social Work will offer its Master of Social Work online.

As clinician activists, our students, faculty and alumni all work to develop solutions to social injustice through their teaching, research, clinical practice, and community work.
