As a Simmons SLIS alum, you are now part of a professional community that stretches across the globe. SLIS alumni are in libraries, schools, museums, technology, higher education, government, corporate libraries, and special collections, among many other institutions. Our alums are innovators, challengers of the status quo, and champions of the right to information. As such, SLIS alumni are our most powerful ambassadors in the world of LIS.

Meet the SLIS Alumni Board

The SLIS Alumni Association Board is a group of alumni dedicated to providing support to the SLIS community. The SLIS Alumni Board sponsors several events per year to connect alumni. Accomplished Alumni

Simmons SLIS is proud to boast some leaders in the LIS field among our graduates, including David Ferriero ’74LS, 10th Archivist of the United States, Robert Hudson ’77LS, Boston University Librarian, and Sarah Thomas ’73LS, Director of the Harvard Libraries.

The SLIS Alumni board sponsors awards for outstanding alums in the Library and Information Science and the Children's Literature Programs. The most recent recipients of the Simmons Alumni Achievement Award include:

  • 2017: Tom Blake ’06LS, Digital Imaging Production Manager, Boston Public Library; received MBLC award, 2015.
  • 2016: Courtney Young ’07LS, Head Librarian and Professor of Women's Studies at Pennsylvania State University; President of the American Library Association, 2014-2015. Recipient of the 2016 Simmons Alumni Achievement Award for Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Library and Information Professional Endeavors 
  • 2016, Award for Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in the Field of Children’s Literature: Victoria Smith ’03GS, Kirkus editor, Simmons Adjunct; Smith has served on award committees for the Newbery, Caldecott, and Printz. 
  • 2015: Toby Pearlstein ’77LS ’87DA retired Director of Global Services for Bain & Company; co-author (with James Matarazzo, Dean and Professor Emeritus) of numerous articles about corporate and special libraries. 
  • 2014: Linda Watkins ’82LS, retired librarian from Simmons SLIS.
  • 2013: Artemis Kirk ’75LS, University Librarian, Georgetown University in Washington, DC
  • 2012: Jo Cates ’84LS, Associate Vice President for Academic Research and Dean of the Library, Columbia College, Chicago
  • 2011: Maura Marx ’04LS, Deputy Director, Institute of Museum and Library Services, Washington, DC.

Our alumni are active in libraries, museums, archives, and beyond. Alums are often featured on our news page for their accomplishments and current projects, and to share insight into their career paths since graduation. Our alumni are frequently recognized for national awards, including the Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers list of LIS professionals making an impact in the field and their community. The most recent alumni Movers & Shakers are posted on our news page.

Annual Events

The SLIS Alumni Association sponsors several programs during the year. Career panels and networking events are scheduled for the spring and fall, in addition to special events. In 2016, events included tours of the illustrated manuscripts exhibition "Beyond Words,” and the annual SLIS After Dark event, a popular networking dinner for current students and alumni. SLIS often hosts alumni receptions at conferences, including  ALA Annual, ALA Midwinter, ALISE, IFLA, SLA and SAA. Career Guidance Beyond Graduation

All Simmons SLIS alumni can subscribe for a weekly Jobline email announcement. The Jobline broadcasts available positions in the many library related areas. If you would like to receive a weekly Jobline email announcement, please email your name and email address to to subscribe. Do you have a position to post for students and alums? Email your listing to the Jobline to post your position for free. 

The Career Education Center provides career coaching through individual appointments to alums. ​Alums are allotted four appointments per year, in person, on campus, or via phone or Skype. Alums still ​have access to Handshake. ​​For more information please visit CEC for Alumnae/i.

Join the Honor Society

The Beta Beta Chapter of Beta Phi Mu invites eligible graduates each year to join the official LIS honor society, which is devoted to ideals of scholarship and service. Members can connect via the Beta Beta Chapter facebook page

Lifelong Learning and Skill Development

Alumni are welcome to use the SLIS Technology Lab, located in One Palace Road, P-213. Staff are available for consultation, email/network assistance, and other support issues. Before visiting, please contact the Tech Lab in advance by phone, (617) 521-2802, or email Alumni can attend free technology workshops, which cover a variety of emerging technology topics. Upcoming workshop listings and online registration are available at

SLIS Alumni have the opportunity to audit graduate courses on a space-available non-credit basis for $455 or an undergraduate course for $250. Audits are processed through the Registrar's Office. SLIS graduates can take advantage of the Beatley Library resources, including the latest electronic resources (onsite access only). You can also access Reference Services by contacting the SLIS Librarian and other Library reference staff. Please feel free to make an appointment with SLIS Librarian Linda Schuller to discuss the library resources.

Ready to Lead? Become a Mentor

The mentoring program assists students by providing insights into competencies required in various professional areas, assessing current skill sets and suggesting ideas and activities for enhancements, and setting up the beginnings of a professional network.  To inquire about a mentor, please contact Assistant Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Em Claire Knowles by email or telephone (617) 521-2798.

Work with Admissions

SLIS Admissions would love to have your help in recruiting future SLIS students, as a SLIS Alumni Ambassador. There are several ways you can get involved, including speaking on an alumni panel at monthly information sessions, being available to email with prospective students to answer any questions, and to be an alumni representative at to off-campus recruiting fairs.
