Learn about our Math Competency Requirement!

Many adult students ask us about the Math Competency requirement at Simmons.  This graduation requirement must be completed within your first year at Simmons, and before registering for the Chemistry prerequisites if you are a Nursing major.  There are many ways you can demonstrate competency in basic mathematics:
  • Pass the Mathematics Competency Exam during Orientation
  • Within the past seven years, complete a mathematics course at or above the level of MATH 101 or 102 at another accredited college with a grade of "C" or higher
  • Successfully complete MATH 101 at Simmons
  • Achieve a score of 600 or higher on the mathematics section of the SAT
  • Achieve a score of 24 or higher on the mathematics section of the ACT
The Mathematics Competency Exam is administered by the Center for Academic Achievement. A practice test and answer key are available online to help you prepare!

Your transfer credit evaluation (TCE) will let you know if any of your prior coursework will fulfill the Math Competency requirement.  Contact your admission counselor if you have any questions about Math Competency, or any other graduation requirements!
