Service Learning in the Simmons Social Work Program

Last month, we heard from Shannon Sullivan '15 about the classroom environment in the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program here at Simmons.  This week, we'll learn more about the role of service learning in the BSW and Shannon's summary of her experience at Simmons so far.  If this sounds interesting to you, go here to learn more about field instruction.

Service-learning has played a major role for me throughout my two years at Simmons. I believe this aspect of the BSW Program is one of the most meaningful. Service learning gives you the opportunity to be exposed to new locations, populations and systems. Having this opportunity to be out in the field can be one of the best ways to learn. This allows you to explore areas where you may be passionate or have special interest. Service-learning is a way to interact with additional groups of people and experience new things. The social work professors do an amazing job to challenge you and encourage you to think outside of the box. In the classroom we have the opportunity to share stories and have discussions about specific situations that occur during our field work. I feel connected to my professors and peers and supported in many ways. The individuals in the social work program have become extremely close. Developing class norms and guidelines is a group process involving numerous conversations between students and the professor so that everyone has input and is able to add thoughts and ideas to the list as they are needed.

There is something very unique and special about the BSW Program. Everyone knows each other's names and as a group we are able to share personal stories. Having this comfortable classroom atmosphere allows discussions and learning experiences to be meaningful. The semesters I have spent with the professors and students in the BSW Program have only encouraged me to look forward to the upcoming school year and be excited and motivated for the future.
