In 1899, decades before women in America gained the right to vote, John Simmons had an idea that was truly revolutionary for the time-- to create an institution where women could prepare for lifelong, meaningful career success. Today the College--at all levels-- continues this mission of preparing students for professional success.

Experiential learning is central to each student's experience at Simmons. Our students gain practical experience through internships, clinical placements, practicums, field study, service learning, and study abroad. Our location in the heart of Boston enables students to secure part-time, summer, and internship opportunities while studying for their degrees, so they gain the experience they need to succeed in a variety of workplaces. Career Education at Simmons
One on One Guidance: Faculty advisers--experts in their fields--help you land invaluable internships, research positions and jobs. Faculty members also work closely with the Career Education Center to bring career education specialists into the classroom to present on relevant career topics. For instance, career education specialists have presented on "Psychology Careers and Graduate Options" in Psych courses, and "Negotiating Salaries" in Communications courses. In addition to a faculty adviser, each student is also assigned a Career Coach, a professional staff member from the CEC, who acts as an adviser for all things career-related.

Students Learn By Doing: Simmons' rigorous liberal arts curriculum that blends theory with real world applications, continually asks students to apply the theories they are learning in the classroom to solve real world problems. For instance, Professor Ed Viera's Advertising 326 uses the case study method. Student teams produce real work for real clients--like the NCIS and the Big Sister organization.

What's unique about Simmons' approach to career preparation is that students are required to start thinking about and planning for their future careers in their very first semester here! In the First Year Experience class, Simmons students identify their individual VIPS (Values, Interests, Skills and Personality type) in order to connect these to potential majors and careers. Additionally, students may choose to enroll in Humanities 370, a course designed by the Career Education Center staff that runs in parallel to an internship. In this course, students learn about pre-professional skills, behaviors, and competencies necessary for future career success, and how to leverage their internship to open further doors.

A Cutting-Edge Career Education Center: A vital link between academic preparation and career readiness, the Career Education Center (CEC) helps you discover who you are and how to find the careers that are right for you. No matter what you dream, the CEC can help you pursue it. And the CEC's services will be available to you throughout your life!

The CEC is staffed by a team of experienced career professionals that provides comprehensive career services and resources. The CEC's Five Step Career Development Model provides a core curriculum that prepares students and alumnae/i with skill development and learning outcomes that demonstrate knowledge of self, career paths and options, and employment and graduate opportunities. Through skill-building workshops inside the classroom and career coaching on a one on one basis, students and alumnae/i acquire the career skills for lifelong career management.

This means your professors work collaboratively with career specialists to bring targeted career-focused presentations into the classroom across all majors! Working closely with the Alumni Relations Office, the CEC develops programming and networking events and provides Mentoring and Job Shadowing Opportunities that often lead to careers. Simmons students take advantage of once in a lifetime opportunities-- like the Success Connection Leadership Program and the Mosaic Multicultural Mentoring Program -- that connect you with leading professionals in your field of interest. The CEC works in partnership with the Career Resource Library (CRL) in providing the latest resources that target departments and market trends. The CRL has an extensive collection of both print and online career resources. Librarians provide personalized career research assistance to students and alumnae/i for career exploration, industry/company research, graduate, fellowship and funding sources.

The CEC's Employer Relations Program has a focus on increasing job and internship opportunities through active outreach with targeted employers. Students have numerous opportunities to attend recruiting events, career fairs and employer programs throughout the year such as the Spring Career and Internship Fair, the Communications Career Information Exchange, the Green Networking & Careers Fair, the Government Careers Information Forum, and many more.

Finally, the Simmons CareerLink online job board: lists hundreds of open positions in industry, health, education, government, public affairs, human services and other fields, including internships, part-time,full-time, and summer jobs. A listing of on- and off-campus student employment openings funded by an organization or the Federal Work-Study Program can be found on the CA$H website.
