The Best Fit for Me
When I first thought of Simmons College, I wasn't too happy. It's an all girls' school, I thought, I'll be
out of my element; plus it's in the city. But as I was applying to other colleges, my guidance counselor, as
well as numerous teachers and friends, told me they thought Simmons was the best fit for me. They explained
Simmons was a close-knit community and a challenging school… With that in mind, I thought I should at
least check it out.
I began to meet so many Simmons graduates, from the nurse practitioner at my pediatrician's office, to two family friends and a retired nurse I met at a family barbeque. One of our friends received her master's at Simmons, and she's now a teacher in Chelsea, Mass. The other friend was a librarian, and is starting a teaching job in Lawrence, Mass. She's a woman after my own heart; she loves reading and books, like I do, and she is always eager to share recommendations or encourage me to continue my writing.
After visiting countless campuses, I stepped onto the Simmons campus and felt like I was at home. Like the generations of women before me, I felt a sudden connection, as if there was a gravitational force pulling me in. I visited three times before Orientation, and even started planning what I wanted to do for my master's: Library Science. My librarian friend keeps telling me "Simmons is the Harvard of Library Science". And no doubt, the college was voted one of the best colleges and the Graduate School for Library and Information Science was voted one of the best graduate schools by U.S. News & World Report. When I think of what all these women have in common, I think of their enthusiastic faces, and how their eyes light up at the mention of the school. That connection never seems to fade. I now understand why so many people thought it would be a good fit for me; and I look forward to my time at Simmons. Ladies (and gentlemen, for those of you in the faculty, staff, and students in the graduate schools) welcome back, and I hope you have a wonderful year. Go Sharks!
