Steve London
Professor of Sociology
Inspiring Social Change
While Senator and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was taught by Stephen London at Wellesley College, it's the Simmons students who cause his voice to crack with emotion. Since his arrival at Simmons in 1975, he has been teaching a wide range of sociology courses, while also directing the College's community service activities. Though his effect on his students is monumental, London himself is modest and reserved, and likes to focus on his students' success stories.
He was willing to admit, however, "I was once in a restaurant with my wife, and one of my former students came up to us," recalls London. "She said, 'You changed the way I think.' It just blew me away."
London's focus on social justice pervades his teaching style. "Service is so closely linked to my courses," he said. "I want my students to think that social change is the answer. I like to think I can instill in them the spirit of altruism that will continue throughout their lifetimes."
London's dearest project, the Scott/Ross Center for Community Service (SRC), actually grew out of a connection with a student, Emily Scott Pottruck '78. Now a trustee, Pottruck was so inspired by London and his zeal for community outreach that she made a gift in 2000 that launched the SRC. The Center is named in honor of Scott Pottruck and her mother, Arlene Ross Gross '47.
"Steve London has the same passion, the same commitment to his students and to the community, as he did 30 years ago," said Pottruck. "I am one of many students whose life was impacted by his dedication and his enthusiasm. And like many others, I will be forever indebted to Steve for helping to mold my character and integrity. Having his presence in my life as a student, and now as an alumna, has been a true gift."
