"Confronting Africa's Anguish" Warburg Lecture
Date: September 24, 2009September 24, 2009
On Thursday, September 24th the Department of Political Science and International Relations hosted our first Warburg lecture of the 2009-2010 academic year. The first Warburg Lecturer of the new school year was Simmons College's own Warburg Professor, Ambassador Thomas N. Hull. The lecture was entitled "Confronting Africa's Anguish: The Challenge of Waging Peace Amidst Conflict."
Africa's brutal, protracted conflicts attract genuine humanitarian concern, but rarely does global attention lead to satisfactory negotiated resolutions. This presentation will identify common elements in Africa's internal conflicts that give insight into their intractability, and then look at the challenges facing regional and international intervention in rebuilding countries where the causes of conflict are largely unresolved and peace may be tenuous at best.
