A native of Uruguay, Professor Halty received a B.A. in French from Chatham College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Spanish and Latin American Literature from Harvard University. She has lived in Uruguay, France and the USA and has traveled extensively in Latin America, Europe and Asia.   Professor Halty has been a member of the Simmons Faculty since 1975, prior to which she was a member of the faculty at Northeastern University and Tufts University.

She teaches a variety of advanced courses in language, literature and civilization as well as "Political Upheaval & Its Expression in 20th Century Latin America,"  a course in English for the Honors Program. She is particularly interested in the relationship between politics and art in Latin America, as well as the works of women writers.   Currently Professor Halty serves as Director of the Graduate Program in Spanish and has been a member of the International Relations Program Steering Committee since its inception, and several other committees. She has also been instrumental in establishing the Short-Term-Courses Abroad program.

Over the years, she also has served as department chair for many years, and has chaired and been a member of numerous committees. She is a member of the Board, the Executive Committee, and Vice President of the International Institute in Spain, a non-profit organization that promotes cultural exchange between Spain and the United States. She also serves as a Community Juror in Spanish for City on a Hill, a Charter School in Roxbury.
