French born Florence Ciret-Strecker has a dual background in English (Maîtrise d'Anglais, Université de Tours- France) and French (Ph.D., Tulane University). She also holds a Master in French as a Second Language (Université de Tours). Her research focuses on French theater from the 17th and 18th centuries, women's studies and political propaganda, as well as education, mentalities and society in Early Modern France. Pr. Ciret-Strecker also teaches and studies translation and she has been a medical translator since 2007. In 1999, she published the translation of an article by Jean Pierre Berthiaume: "Louisiana, or the shadow cast by French colonial myths" and is now working on the manucript of a book-length study of Charles Perrault's fairy tales ("Cinderella," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Sleeping Beauty," amongst others) and their political implications.

Pr. Ciret-Strecker teaches two literature courses in the Department of Modern Languages, both closely related to her research interests: "Fables, Fairy tales and the Emergence of the Short Story" and "French Theatre." She also teaches a culture course on French speaking countries entitled "Outside France," as well as an advanced language course, "Translation and Linguistics."
