4 sem. hrs. Emphasizes communication. Intended for nonheritage learners. Develops all four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Introduces pinyin romanization. Also introduces 80 Chinese characters (either in simplified or traditional form). Uses supplementary audiovisual material to provide cultural and linguistic survival skills.
