Stephen Berry teaches courses in Early American and Atlantic World history. He also directs the department's minor and specialization in Public history, which focuses on the how museums and other sites present the past to general audiences. His areas of interest include religion in the U.S., African-American history, and the history of the American South. He received a B.A. and M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University, a MLIS from the University of Southern Mississippi, a M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in religion from Duke University.
He is currently in the process of revising his doctoral dissertation, Seaborne Conversions 1700-1800, for publication. This work examines the temporary societies created aboard eighteenth century sailing ships and how the Atlantic crossing influenced the development of cultures in America.
