Special Topics in Literature

From Anne Bradstreet to Anne Sexton, from Henry David Thoreau to Noam Chomsky. From Nathaniel Hawthorne to Jhumpa Lahiri, from Louisa May Alcott to Margaret Atwood. Poets, radicals, writers of short stories and novelists thrive in Boston, and much of the most interesting American writing has happened here. This course will explore the literature of Boston from 1620 to the present. Students will be encouraged to canoe through Concord, wander around Watertown, and scale the heights of Bunker Hill. Writing options will include research-based scholarly writing about literature studied in the course or creative nonfiction essays.
