The Computer Science major at Simmons College prepares women for successful careers and for graduate school. We provide an environment that empowers women in computer science by developing their ability to think logically and solve problems. They study the requisite computing foundation and theory, as well as state of the art technology and practice. They develop marketable technical skills as well. An important focus in our cirriculum is the application of technology to solve real-world problems.
Sensitive to varied learning styles as well as to the changing workplace, we use a range of teaching methods to address students' individual needs. These include cooperative learning groups, use of computer laboratory investigations and independent learning, as well as traditional teacher-directed learning.
All Computer Science courses at Simmons College include a weekly lab. These labs use up-to-date equipment, and students are encouraged to work in groups on many lab assignments. The Department has its own general-use lab with 16 Pentium III machines, running Windows XP, as well as a specialized lab with Pentium machines, running Windows XP and Linux, for specialized use such as building networks. In addition, the College has computer classrooms set up for lab instruction.
All Simmons Undergraduates students must complete a minimum of 8 semester hours of independent learning. Independent learning emphasizes student initiative, planning, and implementation on a contractual basis with a faculty member. Independent learning opportunities include independent study or an internship. Recent examples of independent study projects include:
Recent graduates have been employed by: Raytheon Corp, The Boston Globe, Fuji Disk Systems, Fidelity Investments, Lotus/IBM, Lucent, Lockheed Martin, Liberty Mutual, and Meditech to mention just a few.
