Major in Communication: Writing Track


Students may pursue a writing track in journalism and/or professional writing.

Step One: Communications Core | 20 credits

  • COMM 120 Communications Media | Professor White | satisfied mode 1
  • COMM 121 Visual Communications | Professor Grabiner/Ms. Richland
  • COMM 122 Writing & Editing Across the Media | Mr. Connell/Mr. Porter
  • COMM 123 Communications Technologies | Ms. Richland
  • COMM 124 Media, Messages & Society | Professor Fine/Mr. Corcoran

Step Two: Developmental | 12 credits

  • COMM 260 Journalism | Mr. Connell | prereq:  COMM 122
  • COMM 265 Editing Copy and Proof | Professor Berger | prereq: COMM 122

    Choose one of the following electives:

  • COMM 310 Feature Writing | Mr. Connell | prereq: COMM 122 & 260
  • COMM 315 Opinion/Editorial Writing | Mr. Porter | prereq: COMM 122
  • COMM 320 Media and the First Amendment | Mr. Mailloux

Step Three: Electives | 8 credits | choose two in consultation with the faculty advisor  

  • COMM 263 Broadcast Journalism | Mr. Mailloux
  • COMM 310 Feature Writing | Mr. Connell | prereq: COMM 122 & 260
  • COMM 315 Opinion/Editorial Writing | Mr. Porter | prereq: COMM 122

Step Four: Capstone | 8 credits
  • COMM 350 Independent Study | faculty & department chair consent required
  • COMM 370 Internship | junior or senior standing
  • COMM 390 Studio 5: A Communications Workplace
