Shaun holds a B.Ph. (cum laude) in Interdisciplinary Studies
from Miami University (Western College Program) and an M.A. in History from The American University.
Growing up in Cleveland, he spent his summers taking studio art classes from the Cleveland Institute of
Art, and initially majored in studio art, before widening his field of study to include political
philosophy, history and psychology.
In 1996, he returned to his roots in art and graphic design, co-founding Artefact Design, Inc., a design
studio focusing on web strategy, information architecture, and design for the Web. Clients ranged from
local businesses, such as AMI Leasing, to national chains, such as Budget Rent-a-Car. During this period,
Shaun also led the development of Simmons College's award-winning web design team, acting as manager,
senior designer, lead information architect, and chief technologist. In 2000, Shaun left Artefact to
focus on his career at Simmons.
At Simmons, Shaun leads the Department of Web Design, comprised of two Senior Web Designers and a Content
Management System Administrator. The Department is responsible for web strategy, information
architecture, interface/graphic design, coding and site maintenance for Simmons' web properties. Simmons
websites have received numerous awards and recognition, including from CASE, StyleGala and Communications Arts, among others.
At Simmons, Shaun also led the creation of a multi-year "Web Services Master Plan," funded in part by a
grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, to increase Simmons' capacity to take advantage of the Web.
He presented the planning process at the national CASE conference in 2005. An outcome of the plan is the
recent launch of Simmons' new web portal, MySimmons.
Shaun has taught Design for the Web (Comm 244) and Motion Graphics (Comm 333) since 1999 in the
Department, has co-taught web projects in both Portfolio (Comm 344) and Advanced Design (Comm 340), and
has guest lectured in Communications Technologies (Comm 123) and Visual Communications (Comm 121).
He works on occasional freelance projects through Story and Structure, LLC.
