New England Philharmonic

Orchestra-In-Residence at Simmons College

Richard Pittman, Music Director

Since 1997 Simmons College has been privileged to have the New England Philharmonic as its Orchestra-in-Residence. In this capacity the orchestra rehearses on campus weekly, provides complimentary tickets to students, faculty, and staff for all performances, offers workshops and master classes, holds open rehearsals, and collaborates in performance with the Simmons College Concert Choir and other members of the College community.

The New England Philharmonic strongly believes in performing compositions of living composers and is one the few regional orchestras with a Composer-in-Residence. The NEP commissions new works from its Composer in Residence each year. In addition, the Composer in Residence organizes the Call for Scores competition, an annual international event where young composers submit compositions to the NEP. The winner of the competition has her or his work performed by the Philharmonic during a season subscription concert in Boston.

In addition to new music, the orchestra performs less well-known orchestral works by well-known composers of the past such as Haydn, Beethoven, Mahler or Stravinsky, for example. As a result, the New England Philharmonic has been the winner of the prestigious ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming seven times, most recently in 2011.

Please visit www.nephilharmonic.org for more information about this exciting orchestra and their newest season beginning in October.

Free admission for students, faculty and staff of Simmons College.
