American Art

4 sem. hrs. This museum-based course relies on the outstanding American collection at the Museum of Fine Arts to study painting, photography, decorative arts, and sculpture from the colonial period to the 20th century. Considers how the nation during various historical periods defined and presented itself through art. Explores the experiences of women artists in America and the changing role of the U.S. in the international art world. Investigates themes of portraiture, landscape, and the development of modernism. Examines artists such as Copley, Sargent, Homer, Cassatt, and O'Keeffe and many others at the Museum of Fine Arts.
