4 sem. hrs. Examines the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in depth: the woman responsible for its existence, the cultural contexts in which it was formed around the turn of the century, and those in which it exists today. Through readings and course meetings at the museum, this upper-level seminar explores the organization of the Gardner, special exhibitions, the roles of various departments, and the challenges of being an idiosyncratic museum in 21st-century America.
