4 sem. hrs. Students explore black popular culture produced and consumed by Black youth, examining how these works draw on African American historical, cultural, and linguistic practices. Can Black popular culture be resistant, subversive, and contribute to social change? Can these works critically inform the education of Black youth? Course materials draws on scholarship from the fields of education, sociology, African American studies, media studies, and linguistics.
