Susan Nichter: Current Events
February 1 - March 5, 1999
Bread Maker
Susan Nichter, Bread Maker, 1998
acrylic on panel, 42" x 44"

Since her last solo exhibition at Suffolk University in 1996, Susan Nichter had to face the murder of her au pair Karina Holmer and the intrusion of the news media into her family's life. Her new paintings respond to the emotional trauma of these events and to the sensational merchandising of a story without respect for either the truth or the individuals this tragedy touched. While Nichter had no initial intention of making reference to this subject in her work she discovered a need to examine her feelings connected with this sudden, violent loss of life and the repercussions which followed. The Messenger
The Messenger, 1998, 1994
acrylic on panel, 53" x 42"

In "Current Events" Nichter juggles multiple events simultaneously and creates metaphorical statements that touch on a range of topics inspired by her experiences. These painting consciously and poignantly explore the tension of unresolved events.

The exhibition will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Trustman Art Gallery is located on the fourth floor of the Main College Building, Simmons College, 300 The Fenway, Boston. Gallery events are free and open to the public and the building is wheelchair accessible.
