Art: Looking Through the Keyhole at Human Rights and Social Justice
Gary Bailey, Professor of Practice, SSW & SNHS
Nelson Mandela said, "To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity." Current events in Gaza, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria, Syria and the Ukraine, as well as here in the U.S., in New York City and Ferguson, Missouri, are evidence of an increased need for people to focus on that which unites us as we work to advance the ideals of human rights and social justice. Art has often served as a way of documenting and giving voice to those issues that divide us and the possibility of that which can unite us.
