Susan DeMichele: "Last Paintings"
October 4 - October 29, 2004

BOSTON (September 28, 2004) — Simmons College presents “Last Paintings,” October 4-October 29 at the Simmons College Trustman Art Gallery, fourth floor, Main Campus Building, 300 The Fenway. There will be a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct 7. The event is free and open to the public. The Gallery will also be open for the Fenway Alliance’s Opening Our Doors Day on Monday, October 11 from 10:30-4:00.

With a burst of creative energy Susan DeMichele produced a series of small-scale paintings with images of sky, water often including a single island. These nine-inch squares celebrate paint with a looseness, intensity and vitality which surpasses her previous work. They are reflective, sensitive statements imbued with a sense of the spiritual she discovered in the landscapes of coastal Maine. Susan DeMichele had a clear vision in her last work: they are an evocative tribute to the strength of the artist and of her gifts to the audience of this exhibit. The Fenway Alliance’s Opening Our Doors Day is the second anniversary of Susan DeMichele’s death.

Exhibit hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The gallery is wheelchair accessible. For more information, contact Christine Kromer at 617-521-2268.

Detail from a piece by DeMichele

“Like the Impressionists, I prefer to work outside. I delight in the spontaneity of the moment. Working quickly to create the image, I find that painting often takes on its own life-leading me to new visions”

-Susan DeMichele, 1946-2002
