Barbara Crane exhibits her meticulously crafted art quilts at the Simmons College Trustman Art Gallery, fourth floor Simmons Main Campus Building, 300 The Fenway, Feb. 1 to March 3.

In her work, Crane uses landscape imagery as the starting point for each textile image. The transformations of the natural world — rippling water, stormy skies and fields of flowers — emerge from the subtle working of pattern, color and texture. The labor-intensive and meditative act of hand-stitching infuses each unique landscape vision with a sense of inner calm and transcendent wonder.

Crane advances the traditional medium of quilting into new realms of visual illusion and sensuality. The winner of many awards, including the New England Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in 1995 and an award from the American Quilter’s Society in 1985, Crane’s quilts have been featured in many publications. Crane has also exhibited in juried exhibitions both nationally and internationally; in 1994 her work was shown at the Art Quilt International in Japan.

Exhibit hours are from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery will be closed on February 21. Gallery events are free and open to the public. The building is wheelchair accessible. For more information, contact Evelyn Kofler at 617-521-2268 .
